Hi Ian, My Grandad, Gordon Geoffrey Surridge, carried out his National Service (I believe it would have been between 1950 and 1952, from when he was 18 – 20 years old) as part of the Military Police. He passed away last week and one of the pictures we have of him for his order of service is of him in one of the Military Police Jeeps. I’m not sure where the picture was taken but I wondered if you would like me to email over a copy of the picture for your website.

My grandad always talked fondly of his National Service and loved the Matchless 350 bike and the cars that he drove during that time. We did have his squad picture but I cant find it at this time. If I do I can also send this if this is something you would like as well? Best wishes, Claire Sharpe.

Dear Ian, This is, sadly, to inform you that my old pal Thomas ( Tom ) Ferguson, passed away in the early hours of this morning, 30th August, at home in Stirling, Scotland, after a long debilitating illness which he fought to the end. Tom was a member of Squad R1 at Inkerman Barracks and passed out in April 1961. We met and served together at 20th Armoured Brigade Provost Unit at Detmold, Germany, part of the then, B.A.O.R. until I was posted back to the UK. Tom continued his service at Detmold where he met and married Karin. We had the great fortune of meeting for the first time since I left B.A.O.R. at the RMPA Reunion Dinner Weekend at Eastbourne in 2007 and have kept in close touch ever since. We also, together with the girls, attended each subsequent Reunion Weekend except for Portsmouth and Southsea in May this year when he, unfortunately, was too ill to be able to attend. Obviously, our thoughts go out to Karin and the Family and I’m sure this applies to any of the RMP family who knew Tom and Karin, Yours sincerely, David.

02.08.2015:I have just received the following message from Rob Long:

I regret to inform RMP & various military friends of the death of my friend Robbie Calder. Robbie had been seriously ill with a brain tumour since late last year and died peacefully in his sleep early yesterday morning. Typically he faced up to this final challenge in an upbeat, glass half full manner enjoying a glass of scotch and occasional cigar in the evenings to the end. He did not want any fuss nor yet a military funeral but Karen has asked me to let folk know of his passing. RBL. Robbie Calder's funeral will be a private family occasion followed by a thanksgiving service to be held at St Luke's Parish Church Hodnet commencing 14:00hrs. Thursday 6th Aug 2015. The service will be followed by a reception at the Tern Hill Hall Hotel. Family flowers only but donations are welcome and will be divided between: The Lingen Davies Cancer Fund & The Royal British Legion. No black ties ~ bright colours only! Karen has asked if readers have photographs of Robbie. It seems that contrary to received wisdom he was camera shy! Happy snaps may be posted here and I will forward them, or sent direct to Karen. (I have her email address which I will provide where necessary.) I would be grateful if readers who intend to attend let me know PDQ as Karen needs an idea of numbers. The Regimental Secretary, Colonel Jeremy Green, will be speaking at the service and attendees should expect to sing for their suppers by sharing memories and anecdotes at the reception. Travel notes: Hodnet is to be found just off the A53 SW of Market Drayton, Shropshire. The Tern Hill Hall Hotel is midway between Market Drayton & Hodnet on the A53.

13.07.2015:I can now advise that the funeral of our member the late Len Want will take place at the chapel within The Catherine McAuley MercyCare Nursing Home, 18 Barrett Street Wembley W.A. at 2.00pm Thursday 16th July 2015. The service will be conducted by our Chaplain The Reverend David Noble. Our Standard will be present and the family have requested RMPA participation where appropriate. Len was a very revered member and it is hoped that all that can attend will do so. On entering the Nursing Home grounds persons arriving by car should turn sharp left once through the gate and proceed to the main parking area close to the chapel area. There are a small number of parking spaces at the chapel but these may not be available at the time. Should any further details be required, please contact me (08) 9524 8034 or Mob 0408 010 338 if I can help or I will try to find out without disturbing the family. Trevor Margetson, Branch Treasurer, R.M.P.A. Western Australia Branch.

12.07.2015:To all members RMPA Western Australia Branch. It is my sad duty to notify all members of the death of Leonard Gordon Want who passed away peacefully in his sleep this morning, Friday 10 July 2015 aged 90 years. Len Want was revered as one of the elder statesmen of our branch and amongst the first members to join our local group of ex-Redcaps in 2004. Len was also the last of our WW2 era members and a well-respected and committed member of our Branch. In 1940, Len was most surprisingly able to convince the recruiting officer he was of sufficient age to join-up. At the tender age of 15 years, he was able talk himself through the recruiting process and was promptly signed-up into the Royal Marines. Len was given regimental number 110734 and saw active service as a Royal Marine Commando in North Africa, Sicily, Italy and Burma until 1945 and his demobilisation after war service. In 1953 Len joined the Royal Military Police and served 22 years until 1975. His substantial RMP service included Egypt (1953), Nicosia & Famagusta, Cyprus (1953-1956), UK (1956-1957) BAOR at Munster, Sennelager and Detmold (1957-1960). He also saw deployment to 24 Bde in East Africa mainly in Nairobi and Gil Gil, and in Kuwait until 1961; thereafter returning to BAOR to serve principally in Munster during the early 1960s. Len later saw service in Singapore around 1968 and that included a special stint at the British Embassy in Saigon, South Vietnam in 1969. Len had his last years of RMP service serving in BAOR, Cyprus with the UN and finally back to the UK where he served in Chester and Donnington. Len’s regimental number was 22964755 and RMPA life membership number was 9695. It should also be acknowledged that during his RMP service, Len was once severely wounded during a stint of active service in Cyprus. I recall Len telling me the story of the Japanese samurai sword he had obtained off a deceased Japanese officer immediately after a particularly hard skirmish in Burma, prior to the end of the war. In later years, Len was pleased to donate that sword to the RMP museum and proudly kept his letter of appreciation from the Commandant of the RMP Training Centre. Len had a mischievous grin and excellent sense of humour. Len once recounted to me, with much amusement, having been left off some parades as it appeared unseemly for a Corporal to be displaying more medals than the inspecting Brigadier! Len is survived by his widow Sylvia, adult children, grand-children and great-grandchildren. I will arrange a notice in The West Australian on behalf of RMPA Western Australia Branch. As soon as I am aware of funeral arrangements by the family, I shall advise all members accordingly. Brian Griffiths, Branch Chairman, RMPA Western Australia Branch.

23.02.2015:I have received this message from Frank Wood.

Hi Ian, Just a quick note to let you know that Tom O'Brien, known to all as Paddy, passed away on the 12th of January 2015. The day after his 87th birthday. I was notified on the 22nd January, by his step son who was going to take him home to Ireland the following week. I first met Paddy in 1958 when he was sent to Soltau No 6 Section 7th Arm'd Div, attached to 7th Arm'd Brgde. as a Sgt. He was there for a few months when he was promoted to RSM and transferred to 7th Arm'd Div Provost HQ. in Verden. I was demobbed in 1959 and only met up with Paddy again a couple of years ago, when I was trying to locate some of my old army comrades. Paddy ended his service career as a Major, and was a very proud man. I enclose a photo of him at our meeting in his home at Leonard on Sea in Sussex. We had kept in touch ever since. I am led to believe that he was serving in Cyprus prior to being posted to Soltau. Also I believe he had an award from the Queen, but I cannot remember what it was. OBE or MBE. Perhaps you could find out. By the way Paddy's the one in white. Hope this E-mail finds you in Good Health. Take Care. Kind Regards. Frank Wood.

07.02.2015:I have just received the following message from Brenda Bennett.

Dear Ian, I have just heard that Mick (gonk) Garrick has sadly passed away suffering a heart attack while in hospital. Mick served in 247 (Berlin) Pro Coy in the early 60s and in 63 he married Kathy Fitzpatrick and they had one son Ian. Brenda Bennett

15.08.2014: I have received the following message from Judith, Bob Burgess's daughter:

"This is Judith, Bob's daughter, just a line to let you know that my dad passed away on the 2nd of August after being diagnosed with a brain tumour on the 12th of May. He spent four weeks in hospital followed by seven weeks at home and he passed away peacefully at home, with family around him, which was a blessing.

18.06.2014:It is my sad duty to notify all members of the death of Ivor Ronald Campion of Canvey Island, Essex who passed away after a long illness in the UK on Monday 16th June 2014.

Ivor served in the RMP from 1954 to 1956 in Dusseldorf, BAOR. His regimental number was 22990164 and he completed training in squad 416. Ivor was a proud and keen member of the Royal Military Police Association and a full member of RMPA Colchester and East Anglia Branch.

Ivor was a frequent visitor to Perth, Western Australia to visit his daughter Anne, son in law Keith and their young family residing here. It was on one of these family visits he made contact with local ex-RMP members and kept in contact through his daughter until the formation of RMPA Western Australia Branch in 2006. Ivor then quickly showed his support for our young branch by promptly joining as an Honorary Branch Member, in addition to retaining membership of his mother branch in the UK.

Ivor and his partner Tilley were also able to attend one of our regular RMPA lunchtime meetings in more recent years during a family visit to WA. They had a most enjoyable time that day and I recall Ivor being particularly impressed over the evident development and success of this branch, and its stark contrast to the early days of only a few local former ‘redcaps’ getting together for an occasional lunch.

The condolences of all members of RMPA Western Australia Branch are extended to partner Tilley; daughter Anne, son in law Keith and their family. Ivor’s funeral will be held in the UK during next week. I understand that separate notifications in the UK will also be made.

Brian Griffiths, Branch Chairman, RMPA Western Australia Branch.

29.09.2013:I've just today been informed of Neil Harvey's passing last July. It would appear that he died in very poor circumstances financially. Neil's body has suffered the indignity of lying in a mortuary, almost forgotten.

Fortunately, some former RMP namely Taff Reilly, Pete Donaldson, Ray Ellam & Bill Liddle have got together to give Neil the respectful send-off that he deserves. Ray is Chairman of the Kent Branch RMPA.

The RBL have been approached and its understood they will circulate it around the membership for flag bearers and any other provision they may be able to give. The Depot has also been approached and it would appear they will be donating a nominal sum. The four of us have/are supporting the funeral with a financial sum but a great deal is required.

Neil is being cremated next Thursday at Ashford in Kent at 1200 hrs.

A small donation to the following bank account would be gratefully received.

Nat West Bank Sort 52-41-42 Acct 50812890 Reference neilharveyfuneral1

If anyone can make it to the funeral please let me know and I'll pass on your message to Bill Liddle. It's a shame about such short notice-Ian.

01.10.2013:I have since received a message from Jim McQuarrie regarding Neil:

Ian thank you for your post regarding Neil's passing and his forthcoming funeral.

The initial information received by Ray Ellam and indeed myself, led us to believe that Neil had been dead for some 2 weeks before being found, is incorrect Neil enjoyed the friendship of Alan Cole from Dorset who had been his friend since the early 1940s. Alan told me that he and Neil telephoned each other SEVERAL Times every day. On the day of his death Neil had spoken to Alan in the evening and was expected to ring back after a visit to his local shop. This of course did not happen, and as a result Alan alerted the police, who forced entry to the house, and found Neil lying on the floor behind the front door with his keys in one hand and his shopping bag in the other. The Coroners Office feels that death was swift and Neil was probably dead before hitting the floor.

Our branch of the RMPÀ have as WS requested, taken over the funeral and in fact, Ray has been working behind the scene to make it a good send off. I am conducting the funeral , something I have done many times, my son is the Branch Standard Bearer and is a ex RBL award winner. My daughter, is a musician with 2 PWRR and is the trumpeter of choice at Canterbury Cathedral, St Paul's and many other venues in between. She was only too willing to play the Last Post for Neil. This is not a take over bid, but rather coming to Ray's assistance in an unfortunate situation.

Several people will be attending from Neil's old Cycling Club, which was his passion.

Regards Jim.

It is with great sadness that I inform you the recent deaths of two of our friends and former colleagues; Bob Matthews and Syd Armstrong.

1. 19.07.2011:Message received from Terry Poyner:Just to let you know my dad Alan Poyner, passed away at 03:30am Saturday 16th July 2011. He leaves behind my mum (his wife Pat Poyner of 53 years), sons Terry (52), Alan (51), Roger (44); daughter Tracy (48); Grand children Natalie, Corina, Sián, Luke, Emma & Chelsey, and great grandchildren Declan and Millie.

My father lived a long, happy life, he was a great father figure and role model and we shall all miss him. My father was strict but fair and I know that the way we were all brought up made us the dependable individuals we are today, with high morals and standards, respect for others and a desire to bring our children up with the same values our parents expected in us. My father had a fantastic time in the Royal Military Police for 22 years, served in Singapore, Cyprus, Tidworth, Northern Ireland, Bulford Camp, Germany, Holland and fought in Borneo....this though was one battle he did not win, I think he knew on the Thursday that his time was up and died in his sleep on the Saturday morning.

He will be greatly missed by family and friends....Regards, Terry Poyner.

15.01.2011:Brigadier Mike Mathews:Message received from Alan Spoors:

Dear all, You will want to know that Brigadier Mike Matthews has passed away in the Royal Chelsea and Westminster Hospital this morning, 14th January, I am told. No details yet on his funeral arrangements.

Many have commented to me that Mike was a well liked and respected officer. This comment from Steve Ketteringham is typical.

"Sad, he was a bloody good PM(A) who when I worked for him at the MOD booted me out of his office because my breath smelt of garlic. I was also his driver in NI when he was CRMP, we were stopped at 2 in the morning, returning from Aldergrove, by a platoon of Paras, they pointed their weapons at us and I had to quickly explain who the sleeping officer was in the passenger seat, they hastily withdrew".

Details of Memorial Service for Brig. Mike Mathews received March 3rd 2011.

10.01.2011:Mike Bolland. Message from Ann Bolland via Alan Spoors:

Please forgive the impersonal nature of an email but I am writing to tell you that Mick/Mike passed away on Tuesday evening; he suffered a heart attack at home and his demise was very quick; he would have been 71 on the 15th of this month.

I don't want to dwell on the events of those hours because they seem to be on permanent rerun in my head but at some time in the future, I hope to speak to each of you. For the moment, the greatest comfort seems to come from those closest to me and in these days, the three children and four grandchildren have been my strength.

Mike has a huge address book on his computer and whilst I know most of you, there are some names from his military past with whom I am unfamiliar; be assured that he took great delight from sharing the jokes and communications with you.

Thank you.

Kind regards, Ann & family.

07.11.2010:Pete Watson has just announced the passing of Bernard Anson, Warrant Officer Class One, Regimental Sergeant Major, Royal Military Police.
Bernard Anson passed away yesterday after a prolonged battled with illness lasting some 11 years.
Bernard, following his National Service as a RASC Tank Transporter driver in Egypt, joined 252 Pro Coy RMP (V), and even in 1961, he was then one of the Old Guard, being a Cpl.
Bernard continued with RMP & 252 in all it’s various re-names, throughout all the following turbulent years, and was one of the stalwarts of the little detachment in Hull, eventually commanding it as SSgt, and eventually retiring from 252 at Norton (252 HQ) on age grounds, as a WOI.
Even in the 1960’s, he was an enthusiastic member of RMPA: well predating any of the current Hull & ER RMPA members, and being forced to give it up only on the grounds of severe ill health.
Rest in peace Bernard.
Peter.

22.08.2010: I have received this message from Carole Driver, daughter of Lt. Col Ray Smith-RMP.

I found your website whilst spending the small hours awake, how sad I am that my father, now passed away, did not know about it in order to contribute, as I am sure he would have wished.

My father, Lt.Col. A. R. Smith RMP, was known as Ray or Col.Ray. He joined RMP from National Service whilst serving in Nigeria. He served in Berlin, Bielefeld, Dusseldorf from where he encouraged the Ski Hut in Sonthofen to thrive and develop. Other postings included Hong Kong, Singapore, Bulford, MOD London, York, S.H.A.P.E Mons. My father had been in excellent health until 24th December 2009 when we all believed he had caught a chill. In March, after many blood tests and a diagnosis of COPD, was eventually sent for an xray due to his loss of tremendous weight. Sadly he was found to have a 9" by 9" tumour on his good lung and advised that nothing could be done. My mother, Patricia, nursed him to the end at home, extending his time with us due to her expert knowledge as a Physiotherapist, for which we are all grateful. My father slipped away, peacefully on 30th May 2010 and his service of memorial was held on 19th June in Royston, Herts where both he and my mother had spent the last 23yrs since the death of my sister, Nicky.

The family were pleased that Col. Norman Allen-RMP Ret'd was able to give a eulogy and that Col. Jack Thomas-RMP Ret'd was also able to attend.

A Service of Rememberance is to be held by The Royal British Legion on Tuesday 24th August 2010 at 11am for a wreath laying at the War Memorial, Royston, Herts. My mother would like to extend a warm welcome to anyone who would like to attend.

Thanking you in advance for your help in posting our sad news. Please do not hesitate to contact me for further information.

With every good wish,

Carole Driver (nee Smith).

If anyone would like to convey a message to Carole, please contact me. Ian.

CAPT.JANE PROCTOR BROWN:I have just received this from Miles, Jane's husband Via Kevin Morson: "Jane was a WRAC Provost Cpl and was then commisioned and continued to serve with the corps. I served with her on a number of occasions and she was a very good NCO and Officer".

"It is with the most profound sorrow that I must inform you that my beloved wife Jane passed away peacefully yesterday, Tue 29 June at 2000 hrs, after a short but spirited battle against illness.

Jane felt unwell a little over one month ago and after extensive tests it was determined that she was afflicted with a rare and aggressive form of cancer. Her condition spread with great speed and on 24th June, after only 36 hours in hospital, it was decided that there were no further treatment options. She returned home and we were able to spend her few remaining days together in the home and gardens that she had created and loved so much. I take some comfort from the fact that she was able to see her family and talk with our dear friend the Reverend Stuart Foster. She also had time to sit with me in our garden to watch the sun rise. I cannot begin to express the depth of my grief at the untimely loss of such a kind, generous and wonderful wife and soul mate. I will always remember her as the happy, vivacious and effervescent person that she was before this cruel illness struck her down so suddenly.

I am most grateful for the kind messages that we received during Jane’s final days. I read them all to her and she asked me to send her love to all the friends and colleagues who have given her so much happiness over the years. I have been humbled by the calm, brave and stoical way that she tackled her condition to the very end.

Jane has asked for a private and dignified send-off by her close family, however if you wish to send a message you may do so via my email at (please ask me (Ian) for addresses). She would appreciate contributions to the Marie Curie Trust if you feel so inclined. Please say a prayer for Jane".

A full military funeral has been held in Deal for Sgt. Robert Loughran-Dickson, 33, who was killed in Afghanistan last month. At the service at St Leonard's Church the serviceman's teenage son, also Robert, paid tribute to his father and described him as my daddy, my hero and our hero. He shared memories of his father received from colleagues from 4th Regimental Royal Military Police who knew the sergeant as L-D. They said they would remember his cheeky smile, his witty comments, his caring considerate nature and his selflessness. Robert, who was born in 1992, told the funeral service that he had millions of good memories of his father. Sgt Loughran-Dickson's commanding officer Lt. Col. Debbie Poneskis told the packed church that she was at the service on behalf of the regiment in this country and Helmand province in Afghanistan, where the sergeant was shot on November 18. He was one of our finest sergeants and I am proud to have served alongside him and to have known him. He was popular and an extremely well respected figure. I could not have asked for a more reliable, committed and confident soldier. He was a gentleman and loved being in the military police. It is a massive understatement to say he will be missed by all. The funeral was followed by a private burial at St Nicholas Church, Sholden. Sgt. Robert Loughran-Dickson was born in Dover, went to Sholden Primary School and Deal Secondary School. He had been a member of the Deal ATC and played the bugle at Remembrance Sunday services".
